Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if threadworms are left untreated in adults?
What happens if Threadworms are left untreated in adults? In rare cases, if the infestation is left untreated, pinworm infections can lead to a urinary tract infection (UTI) in women. Pinworms can also travel from the anus into the vagina, affecting the uterus, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic organs.
What are threadworms caused by?
What causes threadworms in children? Threadworms spread when their eggs are swallowed ². ‘An infected child will scratch their bottom and the tiny threadworm eggs stick to their fingers or under the nails. These are then passed on to anything they touch or swallowed if they put their fingers in their mouth,’ explains Dr Kenny.
Can threadworms go away on their own?
Yes, they can go away without treatment. As the Countess said, if you break the cycle of swallowing their eggs, you can't reinfect yourself, so the infestation clears up. The way they spread is by making your bottom itchy, esp at night, when they come out to lay their eggs round your anus.
Can pinworms go away on their own?
This location of infection is less common than the perianal region, and the infection usually goes away on its own. Case reports of E. vermicularis migration into the internal female reproductive tract have been reported. These infections are very rare. Pinworms do not cause abdominal pain, bloody bowel movements, fevers, or poor appetite.
