  • Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like substance found in the body’s cells and helps form certain hormones and other necessary substances. Too much of cholestreol causes health problmes. Hypercholesterolemia could be caused due to various reasons.
  • Controllable factors which increases risk include:
  • Diet - consumption of foods high in saturated fats
  • Lack of exercise and physical activity
  • Stress and hormones- the physiologic hormone called cortisol, for example, increases LDL cholesterol level
  • Obesity or overweight
  • Smoking
  • Factors that can not be controlled to lower the risk of developing high cholesterol include:
  • Genetics- Genetic contributions are usually due to the additive effects of multiple genes, though occasionally may be due to a single gene defect such as in the case of familial hypercholesterolemia.
  • Side effect of certain medications
  • Other medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure
