Frequently Asked Questions
When is Empiric antimicrobial therapy recommended for cap?
For all suspected CAP patients, in light of better outcomes with the earliest possible interventions the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) recommends initial empiric antimicrobial therapy until laboratory results can be obtained to guide more specific therapy.
What is the treatment for cap?
For patients with clinically suspected CAP who are admitted to a non–intensive-care-unit (ICU) ward, guidelines recommend either combination therapy with a beta-lactam plus a macrolide or plus ciprofloxacin or monotherapy with moxifloxacin or levofloxacin for empirical treatment.
What are the treatment options for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP)?
Although patients with mild community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) may be treated in an ambulatory setting, patients with CAP who are moderately to severely ill should be hospitalized. Patients with severe CAP require admission to an intensive care unit (ICU). Oxygen and/or ventilatory support may be required.
Do antibiotic regimens for adults with cap equivalence or superiority?
RCTs of antibiotic treatment regimens for adults with CAP provide little evidence of either superiority or equivalence of one antibiotic regimen over another, because of small numbers and the rare occurrence of important outcomes such as mortality or treatment failure resulting in hospitalization.
