Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main causes of cataracts?
Most cataracts are caused by normal changes in your eyes as you get older. When you’re young, the lens in your eye is clear. Around age 40, the proteins in the lens of your eye start to break down and clump together. This clump makes a cloudy area on your lens — or a cataract. Over time, the cataract gets more severe and clouds more of the lens.
How can you prevent cataracts?
Some research shows that eating foods high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E may help prevent cataracts. If you already have cataracts, it may slow their growth. For vitamin E, look to vegetable oils like sunflower, safflower, or wheat germ. Nuts, especially almonds, are also good sources of vitamin E. So are peanuts.
Can cataracts be caused by smoking?
Smoking is a key risk factor for cataracts. Use brighter lights for reading and other activities. A magnifying glass may be useful, too. Limit driving at night once night vision, halos or glare become problems. Take care of any other health problems, especially diabetes.
What are the symptoms of cataracts?
There are multiple early signs of cataracts. They cause blurry vision. They start out as cloudy spots in the eye, but they grow into large opacities in the lens over time. Cataracts are caused by protein changes in the lens of the eye. These lens changes prevent light from getting to the retina.
